NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) — SFA basketball teams have completed their first regular season in the Western Athletic Conference and are now gearing up for their first trip to the WAC tournament in Las Vegas.
The men will enter as the 3 seed after splitting their regular season championship with Seattle and New Mexico State, who both had tiebreakers against the Lumberjacks. Jack’s first match in Vegas is Thursday night at 10:30 p.m. TX in the quarterfinals.
“W is going to give our guys time off earlier in the week,” SFA men’s basketball head coach Kyle Keller said. “We’re going to let them enjoy it. the children have spent a lot of time working very hard this year. We’re going to give them time to enjoy Las Vegas and be a kid. Give them time to walk around and see all the fancy lights and people. As the week progresses, we will be locked in for basketball and going through our normal routine. Playing in a casino will be different. It will be fun, but as we progress it becomes day by day.
The women won’t play until Friday after clinching the tournament’s top seed. The Ladyjacks went 17-1 in their first year as a league member. The semi-final match for the ladies is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Texas time.
“We were already in Vegas when we played at Dixie State,” women’s basketball head coach Mark Kellogg said. We gave them a four hour layover because we removed a red eye. That was the kind of thinking at the time. ‘It’s Vegas. here is the tape. Go for a walk. Go eat. go shopping. Go do what you want to do, Get Vegas out of your system because we knew when they came back, they wouldn’t have the same opportunity. Now Wednesday night we can take them out to eat. Give them maybe an hour to relive that, and then once we get to Thursday, all of our attention will have to be focused on what we’re trying to accomplish.
